A high pressure acid pump is a reciprocating pump that holds differential pressure while moving acid. Pressure on the nameplate does not select it. The acid name, concentration, and temperature decide the wet-end metal and the seal. A water-pump rating, or a fracturing pump built for proppant, is the wrong starting point for acid service.

What a High Pressure Acid Pump Is

It is a chemical high-pressure pump whose fluid is an acid at a differential pressure a practical centrifugal stage may not hold. The same layout can meter acid into a reactor or transfer it, once the duty is named.

“Acid pump” on a search does not say which acid. Hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric, and organic acids do not share one metal or one elastomer. The data sheet is the spec.

Why Acid Name and Temperature Outrank Pressure

Mild acid at moderate temperature often starts with 316 stainless. Hot concentrated acid, wet chlorine, or an oxidizing acid may need duplex stainless, a nickel alloy, or a lined wet end. Copying a pressure rating from a water pump skips that choice.

Seals fail for the same reason. The elastomer and the seal plan—flush, packing, or mechanical seal—have to survive the acid at the temperature you run, including upset temperature, not only the normal line.

  • Acid name, concentration, and temperature, including upsets
  • Flow and discharge pressure
  • Solids, crystallization, or oxidizing behavior
  • Metering or transfer, stated in one line

An Acid Pump Is Not a Proppant Fracturing Pump

Well stimulation can involve acid, and hydraulic fracturing can involve acid blends. The pump still has to match the fluid in the line. A fracturing fluid end built for sand is not automatically an acid pump.

If the duty is clean acid at high pressure, specify a chemical pump and the acid data sheet. If the duty is proppant slurry, specify a fracturing pump. Do not merge the two because both are called high pressure.

What JET Needs on an Acid-Pump Inquiry

JET quotes high pressure chemical pumps from the fluid data sheet. For acid, that means the acid, concentration, temperature, flow, and discharge pressure, plus whether the duty is metering or transfer.

A quote that lists only pressure and flow is incomplete. Send the sheet even if the pressure looks ordinary. The metal and the seal are what make the pump an acid pump.

FAQ

What is a high pressure acid pump?+

A reciprocating pump that moves acid at a differential pressure the application requires. Select it by acid, concentration, temperature, flow, and pressure—not by a water-pump pressure rating.

Is 316 stainless enough for every acid?+

No. It is a common start for mild acid at moderate temperature. Hot concentrated acid and some oxidizing acids need a different alloy or a lined wet end. Send the data sheet.

Can I use a fracturing pump as an acid pump?+

Only if that fluid end and its seals are rated for the acid you will run. A fluid end built for proppant is not an acid spec. State the fluid.

What should I send JET for an acid pump quote?+

Send the acid name, concentration, temperature, flow, discharge pressure, and whether the duty is metering or transfer.
